House Cannith possesses the most gifted artificers in Khorvaire, and Arcanix is still the greatest seat of wizardry. But Zil gnomes are unsurpassed in two fields: alchemy and elemental binding. Some say that the Zil wrested the secrets of elemental binding from the ruins of Xen’drik, and they jealously guard this secret. My family researched elemental binding. We specialized in what plane each elemental originated from and where it’s power originated from. My father, mother, and uncle were the three leading minds behind this research. The theory was, if the elementals could access the power from the plane they were spawned in, we could access that power as well, through that connection. One would no longer have to deal with the limited power of the elemental; we could use its connection to its plane of origin to draw as much power as needed through it. When I was young, I was brought into the project as a fresh set of eyes and ideas.
I should tell you a little of family in my world. Family loyalty is immensely important in Zilargo. In a society that thrives on deception, the gnomes find it extremely important to have someone they can trust without reservation, and for the Zil this is the bond of blood. While families may fight one another for position within a clan, betrayal of a direct family member is almost unheard of and would call for bitter and vicious vengeance.
The group was on the verge of a breakthrough but with my uncle disappearing every now and then with his non-Zil adventuring friends, his extended absences were stalling progress. My mother, blind by her need for progress, decided to turn to subterfuge and politics to make my uncle return and stay till the research was finished. Word of my uncle working with non-Zil while also working on an Elemental Binding project was not received well with the ‘Trust’. Zil gnomes consider this knowledge to be a national resource. By the time I was aware that something might be wrong, my father died in an ‘experiment’, my mother was in the ‘custody’ of the Trust, and my uncle had teleported away with me during the dead of night.
My uncle and I set up in Krona Peak where he had contacts within another think tank group called Tasker’s Dream. During a little time there, I figured out what happened to my family and why we had to run. In Krona Peak, my uncle had many powerful allies, allies that could protect us.
I settled into becoming my uncles apprentice, at least I still had him as family. That was until the day of mourning. That was the day I lost the last of my family and solidified what I was to become; Self reliant.
